NVIDIA recently unveiled its new SUPER line of graphics cards. At CES 2024, we were treated to a refresh of a few models of the RTX 40 series graphics cards, and the first to arrive at Best Buy is the GeForce 4070 SUPER. It features more cores than the previous version to help ensure that the highest settings of modern games at 1440p feel very smooth. It even opens the door to 4K gaming for many popular titles.

Some of the main specs of the unit remain unchanged. Although the base speed is a bit faster (1.98 GHz vs. 1.92 GHz), it’s still a 12 GB card with a boosted clock of 2.48 GHz. It also has the same 3 DisplayPorts and single HDMI port. The main upgrade concerns the processing power.

The GeForce 4070 SUPER features 20% more cores than the regular 4070. In terms of CUDA cores, we are looking at 7168 cores, 1280 more than the predecessor’s 5888. These cores take care of the main processing on a GPU. So, in this case, more is definitely better.

Additionally, there are 10 more ray tracing cores (56). They speed up ray tracing operations for an immersive and realistic gaming experience. Having units that are dedicated to this calculation is how NVIDIA managed to achieve real-time ray tracing in video games.

Lastly, Tensor cores have increased from 184 to 224. These cores are the ones that accelerate the AI.

AI-Powered Graphics

NVIDIA has been injecting AI into gaming for some time now. Tensor cores are the special types of processors that can efficiently handle the matrix-related math used by machine and deep learning, the base of AI.

These options come in three versions of DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). Version 2 enables Super Resolution, which outputs frames of a higher resolution via a smaller one. It also handles anti-aliasing, which greatly smooths edges and lines in a computer-generated image. DLSS 3 adds the insertion of AI generated extra frames to boost the overall frame rate. Lastly, DLSS 3.5, featured on the GeForce 4070 SUPER, also applies ray reconstruction, which increases pixels and the quality of the representation of light.

For artists and content creators, NVIDIA studio integrates with popular software to greatly accelerate your workflow. Popular programs such as Blender, Premiere, Da Vinci, Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator and others integrate with AI to offer never-before seen options that will help you focus on the more creative tasks rather than the repetitive ones.

Great as an Upgrade or for First Time Buyers

If you already own a graphics card, but are due for an upgrade, the GeForce 4070 SUPER is a great choice. If your current unit doesn’t support the different versions of DLSS or any sort of AI enhancements, this sort of upgrade will make a world of difference to your gaming experience.

First-time buyers will have access to a very powerful GPU that will enhance your computer gaming experience. You’ll have access to the newest titles, and you’ll benefit from the best graphics available on the market today. Also, if you are a content creator, you’ll speed up your workflow thanks to NVIDIA’s built in AI tools and your rendering will be handled by the GPU instead of your CPU. Not only will you save time, you’ll also free up your computer for other work.
